UGA Support for SoTL

At the CTL, we aim to support and recognize faculty at all stages of experience with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), from novice to expert and all those in between. We do this through a variety of programs and services focused under the leadership of our Associate Director for Teaching and Learning and our Assistant Director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Please contact the Assistant Director for SoTL, Jennifer Eimers (jennifer.eimers@uga.edu), with questions and ideas.

SoTL Events & Services

SoTL Consultations

Do you have a SoTL project in mind but don’t know where to start? Are you working on a SoTL project and need a thought partner to help you troubleshoot some aspect of the study? The CTL offers SoTL Consultations for just those purposes! You may request a consultation at any stage in the SoTL process (question generation, project design, gathering evidence of student learning, analyzing evidence of student learning, presenting or publishing the work). Contact Jennifer Eimers (jennifer.eimers@uga.edu) to set up a consultation with a member of the CTL's Teaching and Learning Team.

SoTL Scholars Program

Designed for faculty new to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), the SoTL Scholars Program offers participants a structured environment in which to design, conduct, and share their first SoTL studies. During the program, participants work with colleagues and experienced SoTL practitioners to design and implement SoTL projects. Projects may be either individual endeavors or designed and executed as part of a collaborative study among program participants. During the program, participants are guided through the process of defining research questions, exploring background literature, selecting appropriate research methods, and submitting IRB human subjects research paperwork. In the implementation phase, we focus on collecting and analyzing project data, culminating in the opportunity for participants to share their work at our Teaching Celebration and Luncheon. (This program is on hold.)

SoTL Workshops for Faculty

We typically aim to offer at least one SoTL-related workshop in our faculty workshop series each semester. The title and topic of the workshop changes each semester, and we are mindful of adapting our offerings to current campus needs and interests. Check out our Workshops and Events page for more information on upcoming workshops for both faculty and graduate students at UGA.

Umbrella IRB

If you are developing a research project that relates to the question, “Has active learning improved students’ academic success?”, you may be able to submit your proposal under the CTL’s active learning umbrella IRB. This service is intended to make it easier and more efficient for you to navigate the IRB process. More information is available on our Umbrella IRB form.

Regents' Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Awards

The CTL manages UGA's nominations for the University System of Georgia's Regents' Teaching Excellence Award. This includes a nomination for the Regents' SoTL award. Each year UGA selects a nominee from among UGA's faculty, and the CTL works with the nominee to develop their nomination packet. The call for nominations is typically distributed via our faculty newsletter.
