Using Sakai for Collaboration

Course Design
Designing a new course or redesigning an existing course can be a daunting task. Effective course design begins with understanding both who your students are, and what you want them to learn. This session will discuss course design by focusing on student learning and using a "backwards" design, learner-centered approach to develop a course that engages students in significant learning experiences.

Peter Filene, The Joy of Teaching

Designing and Using Rubrics
Are you interested in facilitating the grading process? Do you want to make sure that your grading is as fair as possible? Rubrics can help with both of these issues. This 90-minute workshop will include an introduction to rubrics and the opportunity to begin designing a rubric for a class assignment you bring to the session.

WebCT Quiz Management
This hands-on workshop is designed to be taken after WebCT Quickstart. In this workshop you will learn to use WebCT and Respondus to create WebCT quizzes containing multiple choice, true/false, short answer, matching, calculated, and discussion questions. Because Respondus is a Windows application, this workshop is recommended for PC users or Mac users with the Virtual PC Windows emulation program.

WebCT QuickStart
In this workshop you will learn how to customize WebCT for your class, upload and manage course materials, backup your course, create links, and add WebCT tools. It will introduce adding students and working with your gradebook. This workshop is a prerequisite for all other workshops and is highly recommended for every new WebCT user.

Wimba Classroom
In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Wimba Live Classroom, a virtual classroom and collaboration tool in WebCT. This includes adding and configuring rooms in your WebCT course, loading content to your rooms, and strategies for live presentations. **Participants are asked to bring a computer headset with microphone.

University System of Georgia Brown Bag Event – Wimba at UGA and University of West Georgia

Back for its third year, the USG 'Brown Bag' online presentations allows USG system members to present the work they're doing with Wimba. These presentations are exclusively intended for fellow USG members. Join Sherry Clouser and Janet Sylvia of UGA as they explain how Wimba has enabled UGA to conquer the constraints of limited time, travel, and text-only content to offer some of the most robust online courses in the world. Christy Talley, of the University of West Georgia, will then profile a few of UWG faculty & staff users as well as give a brief summary of the last 7 years with Wimba!

Online Seminar: Supporting Student Learning Online in Science and Engineering

Engineering, math and other science topics can be challenging to support online. What works and does not work? How does one get started? The facilitators will describe how they use a variety of online tools inside and outside the course management system to address their learning and teaching issues. They will speak to some innovative and effective techniques and approaches that can be used more broadly in science and engineering contexts.

Teaching Philosophy Statement Workshop

Participants will learn about the general characteristics of an effective teaching statement as well as the uses for such statements. Participants will bring a draft of a teaching statement, and during the session they will read and critique others’ statements and have their statements assessed. drafting of the statement.

Effective Online Discussions Webinar

The heart and soul of many online courses is the discussion area. However, those new to online teaching are often skeptical about the use of discussions, asking questions like: "Will students overwhelm me?" or worse: "What if they don't respond?" this session will explore how instructors can approach online discussions including considerations related to the purpose of discussions, tips on managing student (and instructor) expectations, techniques for assessment, and tips on how to stimulate discussion. This webinar is presented by Cindy Underhill and Emily Renoe, University of British columbia Office of learning Technology.

Second Life in Higher Education

a hands-on workshop introducing the virtual world of Second Life. Virtual worlds are attracting considerable academic interest as alternative platforms for learning. In this workshop, we will explore some of Second Life's attractions, learn how to construct and inhabit an avatar, create some 3D objects, and discuss the educational implications of virtual worlds. Creating a Teaching Portfolio

There are two separate types of teaching portfolios: one is for improving your teaching, the other is for getting "stuff"-awards, jobs, promotion and tenure. This session provides an overview for GTAs or GLAs of both types.  An emphasis is stressed on preparing documents for the Graduate School Teaching Portfolio Program, which has a Spring 2008 deadline of March 7.  This event is part of the Graduate School's Professional Development Seminar series.

Rediscovering Gaming in Education: New Opportunities for Ancient Ideas

Lloyd Rieber, Professor of Educational Psychology and Instructional Technology, will explore the general question of what makes games compelling from both intellectual and motivational points of view, will showcase middle-tech and low-tech gaming technology, and provide examples of gaming that any instructor can immediately begin to implement. Dr. Rieber will also discuss the educational opportunities of students building their own “Homemade PowerPoint Games.”

Sympodium Demonstration and Discussion

The Sympodium is a technology that is being rapidly adopted across campus. It is a touch-sensitive LCD
screen that enables faculty to write “virtually” on top of any computer software and save those

Jones’s The Missing Professor: An Academic Mystery, which is a single narrative comprised of individual case studies that explore the challenges facing new faculty, curriculum and institutional changes, faculty governance, and other issues—all in a humorous farce of a mystery. Ed Nuhfer, the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Idaho State University, states, “This is the first book
I’ve seen with the courage to look at some common interactions among academics in the eye and extend the invitation: ‘Let’s have a discussion about this.’” Participation is open to faculty, staff, graduate students, and
administrators but is limited to fifteen people. CTL will provide a free copy of the book. When the group meets on March 22, we will determine the date and time of the second meeting.

Lectures on Learning and the Brain

Dr. David Rose is the founding Director and Chief Scientist of Cognition and Learning at the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), which has earned international recognition for its development of innovative, technology-based educational resources and strategies based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). He also regularly lectures at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, where he has been on the faculty for 20 years.
