Teaching Development Programs
Preparing Future Faculty
Originally set up in 1993 as a partnership between the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and the American Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), PFF was developed to help prepare graduate students for careers in academia. Although funding for the program has run out, the website is still updated and contains a wealth of interesting articles about teaching, research, and service.
NSF Chautauqua
This is a National Science Foundation (NSF) program that is designed to enhance the teaching techniques of faculty in the natural or social sciences, mathematics, or engineering disciplines. The Chautauqua are short (3 days), intense classes that are designed to help faculty keep their teaching content and methods current. Some examples of courses to be taught for 2005: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Bioinformatics, Geographic Systems, Ethics, and Forensic Science.
National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT)
This site is particularly useful for K-12 science teachers. It has a number of publications available online, links to workshops, and classroom exercises. NABT is committed to making sure that science education is current and emphasized in early development of all students. For example, there are excellent teaching modules available to NABT members and they are called “Biology on a Shoestring”.
