Finding Educational Value in Second Life

Some links (slurls) require that you have Second Life open already. Some require that you take a HUD. A HUD will "hover" near the top of your SL window to enhance your experience with tools for navigation, audio, gaming, etc. Enjoy!

John Lester's website at http://zero.hastypastry.net/pathfinder/ included the following key websites about higher education and Second Life.

Regarding development:

Of interest to all:

The following sites and notes came from colleagues in the University System of Georgia.

Notes:
  1. There are many wonderful educational sites not yet included in this short list - my apologies to those whose efforts go unmentioned in this document.

  2. A colleague reported from the 2008 Educause Learning Initiative:
    • faculty have begun using the New Media Consortium campus to develop learning spaces;
    • alternative representations of knowledge are being used more frequently in Second Life;
    • issues and concerns include a steep learner curve, gamers who find it limited and/or naive, social risks v. a need for socialization beyond one island, and making provisions to student avatars; and
    • other projects are underway.  See Active Worlds (http://www.activeworlds.com/), Croquet (http://www.opencroquet.org/), and MetaPlace (http://www.metaplace.com/).
