Instructional CD and companion DVD set

INTRODUCTION:

Inspired and written by Rebecca Enghauser, University of Georgia Dance Education faculty, the CD and companion DVD were created for in-service and prospective middle grades and high school teachers.

Dancing From the Ground Up: An Introduction to Modern Dance for Teachers grew out of a perceived need to broaden awareness and interest in Modern dance in the state of Georgia and beyond. Intertwined with this goal is my personal conviction and belief in the fact that Modern dance has the ability to afford great experiences for young people. Yet, despite its benefits, many have never really been fully introduced to Modern dance-when and how it evolved, and what defines its basic concepts.

These resources are neither meant to be a sole authority on Modern dance, nor are they meant to train novices to be expert practitioners in the motor skills of Modern dance. Rather, they are meant to be more of a jump starter, an igniting of interest and understanding in the genre through a mix of hands on experiences and informational background and concepts, so that the learner can go on to develop more activities, as well as feel more comfortable to research, experience, learn about or train in the genre, and ultimately incorporate Modern dance into his/her curriculum.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE CD AND COMPANION DVD?

1. Studio dance teachers who have not readily incorporated Modern dance into their teaching repertoire.

2. Physical education teachers (or teachers in training) who are in need of basic resources to assist them in creative dance units.

3. New and even experienced dance teachers.

4. Students who wish to become teachers, providing concepts, structures and possibilities of teaching Modern dance.

5. Art, Music and Drama teachers who have had peripheral experiences with dance/movement, but would like to facilitate experiences in dance to widen their students’ abilities and knowledge base and apply back to their own art form.
