The major responsibility for instruction at the University of Georgia lies with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (706-542-5806). The Center for Teaching and Learning (706-542-1355) is a unit reporting to the Vice President for Instruction specifically committed to the advancement of instruction and faculty development. A number of programs sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and other University units have been designed to promote the advancement or recognition of instructional and academic achievement.

Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship

The prestigious Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship is the highest honor for distinguished teaching at the University of Georgia. Each school and college is allowed to forward at least one nomination to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Nominations are reviewed by a committee of faculty and students appointed under the guidance of the University Council. Up to five recipients, recognized yearly at the Faculty Recognition Banquet, receive a plaque, an award of $1,000 discretionary funds, and a permanent base-salary increase of $6,000.

Richard B. Russell Undergraduate Teaching Awards

To recognize excellence in undergraduate instruction, three faculty members are selected each spring to receive $5,000 from the Richard B. Russell Foundation. Recipients must have been at the University a minimum of three years and have been in a tenure track position for a total of no more than ten years prior to receiving the award.

Lilly Teaching Fellows Program

The Lilly Teaching Fellows Program, sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, is one of the most exciting faculty development activities for new faculty offered at the University. Initiated by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc., the program provides opportunities for ten junior faculty each year to significantly enhance their professional development as teaching scholars. Fellows select senior faculty to serve as mentors and meet regularly during the academic year for presentations, seminars, and off-campus retreats. In addition, each Fellow receives a small individual grant to implement an instructional improvement project. Information and application forms can be obtained from the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Senior Teaching Fellows Program

The Senior Teaching Fellows Program provides an opportunity for eight senior faculty members each year to work together on instructional projects and idea-sharing activities. Up to $2,000 is available for each participant for an instructional improvement project. For further information, contact the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Faculty Learning Communities

A faculty learning community (FLC) consists of six to twelve faculty from different disciplines who meet about every three weeks to consider their topic of mutual interest and to learn from each other. At the end of the academic year, the FLC has the opportunity to offer the larger University community conclusions regarding its topic at a general forum. FLCs are sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, which supported seven in 2007-08, and nine in 2008-09. For further information, contact the Center for Teaching and Learning or visit the FLC web page.

Study in a Second Discipline

Up to four fellows are chosen annually to study with University colleagues in other disciplines for the purpose of expanding their fields of expertise. Applicants propose a systematic study through course auditing, independent study, research, or other activities. Each fellow's home unit receives $20,000. For further information, call the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

Sarah H. Moss Fellowships

The Sarah H. Moss Fellowships provide funds for travel and related expenses for faculty pursuing advanced study in institutions of higher learning abroad and in the United States. Expenses of family members accompanying married faculty are covered also. Study in certain Southern universities is not allowed. For further information contact the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Learning Technology Grants

Learning Technology Grants support innovative development in instructional technology at the University. Teaching faculty in tenured or tenure-track positions are eligible. Funding amounts take into account available funds and the scope of the project. The grants are administered by the University's Committee for Applied Instructional Technologies (CAIT).

Writing Fellows

The Writing Fellows program was established in 2007 by the Office of the Vice President of Instruction; twelve faculty selected as Writing Fellows meet regularly to discuss the most effective ways to teach and respond to student writing. Each Writing Fellow receives a stipend of $1,000 to subsidize projects aimed at constructing courses or initiatives that will support student writing at UGA.

Special Sandy Beaver Awards

The Special Sandy Beaver Awards are available to instructors, assistant professors, associate professors, and professors in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences (706-542-3400) who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. Special consideration is given to eligible candidates who are teaching or have taught introductory undergraduate courses in their discipline and who have demonstrated sustained effort and commitment to this area of instruction. The Special Sandy Beaver Awards are granted annually and recipients receive a cash award of $2,800.

International Academic Program Awards

The International Academic Program Development Fund is designed to encourage international education activities. Grants of up to $3,000 may be provided to faculty members for preliminary planning and development, site visits, and other start-up costs for new study abroad or exchange programs; for enhancements to existing programs and exchanges; or for projects that advance international education and faculty and student participation overall.  Additional information is available at Office of International Education (http://www.uga.edu/oie/friapdf.htm) or via calling 706-425-2946.

College and School Awards

In addition to the awards noted above, awards recognizing excellence in teaching are bestowed annually by the Colleges of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Pharmacy, Education, Business, Journalism and Mass Communication, Family and Consumer Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, and the Schools of Environmental Design and of Law. For further information on deadlines and application procedures, please contact the respective College or School.

Student/Faculty Enrichment Fund

Activated on July 1, 1998 and administered by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, this fund ($100,000) is for faculty use to support the gathering of classes or appropriate student groups.
