Welcome!

A letter from the University Librarian and Associate Provost, William Gray Potter.

Welcome to the largest library system in the state of Georgia!

Our holdings, more than 4 million volumes, include books, maps, journals, recordings and now digital materials.  From your desktop you and your students have electronic access to over 30,000 journals offering full-text journal articles, plus 30,000 e-books through NetLibrary.

The Libraries offer more than materials. We offer people and expertise. Our staff can:

  • Answer questions about your research.
  • Purchase books and materials for your topic.
  • Facilitate borrowing materials, both from the UGA Libraries and from libraries around the world.
  • Instruct your class about doing research for assignments.

Please spend a few minutes exploring the links on this page, and get to know the Libraries. We're here to help you with your research and to help your students develop the critical thinking skills they need to succeed.

The Libraries' Homepage

On the Libraries' Homepage, you'll find links to our online catalog, GIL, GALILEO , Research Central , the Electronic Journal Locator, plus a whole world of information and resources.

  • The Libraries' catalog is called GIL .  Locate call numbers and holdings information for over 4 million volumes.

  •
  • GALILEO is a collection of online databases, many of which offer full-text.  With nearly 500 databases, you field is sure to be covered. Access GALILEO in the Libraries, from your office, or from home. You'll need the password in order to work from home.

  •
  • When you don't know where to start and the Libraries are closed, turn to Research Central .  Arranged by subject area, Research Central provides you with the names of resources to use for your research.  Of particular use to your students, there is also a section of Research Central which gives guidance on the research process.  Citation style sheets may also be accessed here, as well as warnings about plagiarism

  •
  • With over 30,000 full-text journals, the Electronic Journal Locator is a useful tool for locating the database which supplies the electronic format of the title you're seeking. Developed by UGA Librarians, you can search by keyword, exact title or a phrase. Visit the EJL when you have a citation and wish to locate the material electronically.

Reference

The Reference Department has Reference librarians in all three of the UGA Libraries: the Main Library, Science Library and the new Electronic Teaching Library in the Student Learning Center. We're here to answer questions for you and your students, so please ASK!

Instructional Services & Research Conferences

Librarians are available to talk to your classes about using the libraries, especially for assignments you've given them. Visit our page of products we've developed to complement classes in library instruction.  These products are tailor-made to fit your particular class. You and your students can also make an appointment for a personal research conference .  Click on the links above to learn more about our services.

Interlibrary Loan

W have one of the largest collections in the region, but even we don't own everything. We will, however, try to get you almost anything!  Let the Interlibrary Loan Department locate and retrieve materials for you from around the world.

Collection Development

Meet the specialists who select materials for our collection and learn more about the programs offered through Collection Development, such as how you can suggest a title for purchase, or donate a gift book.

Access Services

Do you want to give your RA permission to check out materials for you? Do you have questions about borrowing policies?  Learn more about Access Services and how this department can help you get needed materials delivered to your office.

GIL Express is an innovative resource that allows students, faculty and staff access to all eligible circulating materials at all USG libraries through the University System of Georgia Universal Catalog. GIL Express is available to all eligible patrons through both an onsite requesting service (walk up) and a remote requesting service.

Course Reserves service is available to faculty or graduate students who wish to restrict the loan period or provide electronic access on assigned readings in order to make them available to a maximum number of students.

Faculty Liaison

Let Virginia Benjamin teach you how GALILEO research databases interface with two, free, site-licensed writing tools: Endnote, the world's premier bibliography manager, and RefWorks, the premier web-based bibliography product. The UGA Student Tech Fee funds both of these academic writing solutions for UGA students and faculty. She can also show you how to update your dossier with citations to your publications from a variety of full-text GALILEO databases, as well sites such as amazon.com, Google Book Search, and Google Scholar.

Data Services

Data Services facilitates access to a significant collection of statistical data resources in the social sciences and the U.S. Census. Resources include ICPSR, Datastream, Compustat, CRSP, the Roper Center, U.S. Government data, among others.  Let the Data Services staff assist you with your data-based research needs.

Special Collections

The Libraries are privileged to provide access to valuable primary source materials.  Many of these materials are housed in our Special Collections Libraries:  the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library , the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies and the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collection .  We also own one of the largest map libraries in the country. Here's a virtual tour of the Russell Library.

This is just a brief introduction to all we have to offer.  Please stop by one of our three locations and get to know us.  The Libraries have a world of information available to you and we are here to assist you with your continuing research as well support your teaching in any way we can.
