SELECTION PROCESS
Up to ten faculty members will be selected in March of 2009 to begin the program in the fall of 2009. The selection process is as follows:
- All application materials must be recieved by March 2, 2009.
- The applications will be screened by a committee consisting of the director of the program and former Lilly Fellows.
- The committee will invite approximately 20 candidates to meet personally with the committee in March of 2008. These interviews are approximately 15 minutes in length.
- All candidates will be notified of the committee's decision in April 2009.
In selecting the Lilly Fellows, the committee uses its discretion in order to select a group from a broad range of disciplines who will likely have a significant positive impact on the University's teaching mission. In the past, the following factors have often weighed heavily in making close decisions:
- A demonstrated commitment to teaching weighs heavily in the committee's decision. The program is not intended as a remedial teaching program nor as a simple reward for prior excellence. Instead, the program builds for the future of UGA by selecting those faculty members whose academic record shows great promise for future impact upon UGA students. It is the committee's responsibility to select a group who will have a major positive impact on the University's teaching mission. Therefore, a candid evaluation of this factor by the department head or dean and the applicant's articulation of her/his goals are often critical factors.
- Attendance at all meetings and events is critical. Therefore, faculty who are able to arrange their schedule to enable this level of participation are preferred.
