Exempt a Student from a Grade Item

Instructors may choose to exempt a student from one or more grade items. The exemption means that the grade will not be included in the category or final grade for selected students.  You can start with a grade item, then select one or more students to exempt, OR you can start with a student, then select one or more grade items to exempt for that student. 

To start with a grade item: 

  1. Click Grades from the course navigation bar. 
  2. Click Enter Grades.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of the grade item name and choose Grade All.

  4. Using the selection boxes down the left side, select the student(s) you wish to exempt, then click Exempt.

  5. Click Save and Close. 

To start with a student:

  1. Click Grades from the course navigation bar. 
  2. Click Enter Grades.
  3. Click a student's name to see all grades for that student.
  4. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of the student's name, then choose Bulk-Edit Exemptions.

  5. Select each grade item from which the student is exempt.

  6. Click Save and Close.
