| The central mission of CTL is to provide campus-wide leadership on matters relating to instruction. By coordinating a wide variety of programs and activities, CTL serves faculty, administrators, and graduate teaching assistants (TAs) in each of the University's schools and colleges. Teaching is promoted as a fundamental enterprise at UGA through numerous campus-wide activities. These include instructional grants, consultation services, faculty and TA development programs, publications, activities planning, and teaching resources and media services. In addition, seminars, workshops, and conferences that address a wide range of topics are offered throughout the year. Since its inception, CTL has sought to promote vitality among faculty and administration and to foster an institutional climate that reinforces excellence in teaching and learning. | |||

|
During the late 1970s, three separate faculty committees recommended that an office dedicated to the improvement of teaching be established at the University of Georgia. In the fall of 1979, with final approval from the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Instructional Development (OID) was created. During the following two years, two acting directors worked with the newly appointed Instructional Advisory Committee while a national search was conducted for a permanent director. Dr. Ronald D. Simpson was selected as the permanent director in 1981. Dr. William K. Jackson succeeded Dr. Simpson as director in 1996. In 1997, the Office of Instructional Development and the Instructional Resources Center were integrated into a single unit, the Office of Instructional Support and Development (OISD). In 2006 its name was changed to the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Prof. Nelson Hilton was appointed director.
The Instructional Advisory Committee (IAC) plays an important role in the development and implementation of the various programs and activities of the CTL. The committee consists of members of the Teaching Academy appointed by the Chair and Executive Committee of the Academy. The IAC screens nominees for Outstanding Teaching Assistant and Graduate School Excellence in Teaching Awards and also engages in a variety of other activities related to teaching. The programs, services, and activities of CTL are clustered within six major areas: Classroom Support, Consultation, Faculty Programs, Production Services, Teaching Assistant Support, and Teaching with Technology. This office also coordinates the activities of the Committee for Applied Instructional Technology (CAIT) and manages CAIT's Learning Technologies Grants Program (LTG). |
